Pound-force per square inch
Definition The pound-force (psi), based on avoirdupois, is a unit of pressure used in imperial and US units. It is the pressure created when one pound of force is applied over a 1-square-inch surface. One psi equals approximately 6,895 Pascals (N/m 2).

Origin/History: The pound-force per square inch is an unit that was originally used by the US and imperial systems. The avoirdupois weight system was standardized in 1959. It is believed that the system was first used in England in around 1300, and it was used for international wool trade. The prototype pound was called the avoirdupois Wool Pound.

Current Use: Psi is widely used for measuring pressures such as tire pressure, pressure in scuba tanks, and pressure on natural gas pipelines. The pascal is used more in scientific contexts. However, the psi unit is used more in everyday situations, especially in countries such as the United States and others that use the US customary system of units.

Bar

Definition: The bar (symbol bar) is the metric pressure unit that is equal to exactly 100,000 pascals. It is equivalent to 0.987 atmospheres (101.325 Pa), which is the unit of pressure that’s often used for standard pressure.

Origin/History: The unit bar was introduced by Vilhelm Brjerknes, the Norwegian meteorologist responsible for modern weather forecasting. The word “bar” is derived from the Greek “baros,” meaning weight.

Current Use: Despite the bar being a metric pressure unit, it is not recognized by the International System of Units and even discouraged in certain fields. The International Bureau of Weights and Measures specified that the bar is a unit of pressure that authors are free to use, but it has not been included in the list of non SI units accepted to be used with SI.

Millibars, also known as mb, are commonly used to refer to atmospheric air pressure. Atmospheric pressure is 1013.25 millibars (101.325 kPa). Meteorologists, weather reporters and other professionals use this unit because it is convenient. Working in pascals results in larger values.
